The growth medium for Rhodospirillum
rubrum, a phototrophic non-sulfur bacterium, contains succinate as
the sole source of electrons and carbon. The organisms metabolize succinate
via the oxidative tricarboxylic acid cycle and produce intermediates which
are assimilated (dashed arrows in the figure). |
