Why is it energetically more favourable for phototrophic microorganisms to use hydrogensulfide as electron donor for photosynthesis than water ? Applying bio-thermodynamics we will be able to illustrate, why sulfidotrophic and sulfurotrophic phototrophs are dominant over oxygenic phototrophs under actual boundary conditions in the redox transition zone of a sulfidic lake.
